3Di in classic style

Hannah Morris

The prestigious J Class fleet reunion in England is just around the corner, and three of our very own North sailors will be there to show how 3Di can form a winning shape in classic style.

Managing director Richard Bicknell landed in Falmouth last week to fit sails on Ranger, before the first regatta which starts on the 26th June. Ranger’s new sails include a mainsail, #1 Light/Medium, and a #1 Medium/Heavy. These races will provide a great opportunity to test 3Di material on these heavily loaded sails. Richard believes their newest sail technology will maximise J-class speed and efficiency.

“The whole idea of 3Di on the J-class is at it is with all other yachts. Less stretch means more power put into the boat, which in turn means you are powered up earlier. We are always trying to get maximum horse power out of these boats.”

Sailing against Bicky will be our Service Manager Bushy onboard Rainbow, and Tom Dodson on Velsheda. Rainbow will be taking part in these races for the first time in 78 years following her rebuild by Holland Jachtbouw.

Holland Jachtbouw has a  leading reputation in the higher echelons of the superyacht industry. "For the last two decades our yard has been distinguished by a no-nonsense pro-active approach to innovative custom projects." - Read more about Holland Jachtbouw here.

North Sails New Zealand has now constructed three mainsails for Ranger, along with sails for Velsheda, Rainbow, and Endeavour. We will be watching how 3Di handles the conditions, and which of our staff members come out on top, as racing starts later this month.
